How to use the A5 booklet alongside this app · Kāwaroa Reef Rocky Shore Survey

Two-tool approach

The A5 paper booklet is the primary field record — waterproof, battery-free, and legally defensible. This web app is the digital companion — species reference, go/no-go checker, digital tally backup, educational tools, and data summary. Use both together for every survey.

Bad Weather Contingency Protocol
Activate when swell >0.8m · Wind >40 km/h · Lightning · Any unsafe condition
1

Check the go/no-go checker on the Weather & Tides page. If swell >0.8m or wind >40 km/h, activate the contingency plan.

2

Move group to the Destination Kāwaroa shelter or nearby classroom. Do not attempt to access the reef.

3

Open the Education page → Bad Weather tab. Run the Virtual Transect Explorer as a guided group activity (15–20 min).

4

Run the Species Identification Quiz (10–15 min). Use the Species Gallery for reference.

5

Print or display the Intertidal Zone Diagram from the Downloads page. Facilitate a discussion on zone ecology and stress factors.

6

If time permits, run the Data Analysis Activity using TRC historical kaimoana data (20–30 min).

7

Reschedule the field survey for the next suitable low-tide window. Check the tide table on the Weather & Tides page for the next ±2hr window.

Never compromise on safety. The reef will be there next time. All bad-weather activities are on the Education page and are directly linked to the Kāwaroa Reef curriculum — participants still complete meaningful learning even without a field visit.

Facilitator Tips — Kāwaroa Reef Specific
Group Size & Roles
Ideal group: 6–12 participants. Assign roles: lead surveyor (tape), recorder (booklet), app operator (tally), photographer, safety watcher. Rotate roles between zones.
Neptune's Necklace Cover
Hormosira banksii can exceed 80% cover in the mid zone — this is normal at Kāwaroa. Use the percent cover estimator on P.5 of the booklet. Discuss desiccation tolerance.
Pāua Location
Pāua are typically under rock overhangs in the low zone. Do not lift rocks — observe from the side. Remind participants of the 125mm minimum legal size and no-take rule during surveys.
Introduced Species
The Orange-tipped Sea Squirt (Corella eumyota) is introduced. If found, record precise GPS location in the booklet P.8 sketch and in the app field notes. This data is valuable for TRC.
Triplefin Fish
Common Triplefin are cryptic — look in rock pools and under algae. They have three dorsal fins. Encourage participants to look carefully before declaring a pool 'empty'.
Wet Basalt Safety
Kāwaroa Reef basalt is extremely slippery when wet. Enforce closed-toe shoes with grip soles. No running. Move slowly and deliberately. The safety watcher should be on the highest point.
Tide Window
The survey window is ±2 hours of low tide. The low shore and kaimoana zones are only accessible in the final 30 minutes before low tide. Plan the transect to work high→mid→low in sequence.
CCD — Biosecurity
Kāwaroa Reef is adjacent to the Tapuae Marine Reserve. CCD is mandatory. The Destination Kāwaroa wash station is at the carpark. Check boots, buckets, and quadrat frames for hitchhikers.
