Facilitator Guide
How to use the A5 booklet alongside this app · Kāwaroa Reef Rocky Shore Survey
Two-tool approach
The A5 paper booklet is the primary field record — waterproof, battery-free, and legally defensible. This web app is the digital companion — species reference, go/no-go checker, digital tally backup, educational tools, and data summary. Use both together for every survey.
Survey Workflow — Phase by Phase
| Booklet | App | Facilitator Action |
|---|---|---|
| — | Weather & Tides page | Check MetService 7-day forecast and LINZ tide table. Identify the low-tide window (±2hr). Abort if swell forecast >0.8m. |
| P.2 Safety Checklist | Survey Tools → Survey Header | Brief participants on safety protocols. Print or download the A5 booklet. Assign roles: lead surveyor, recorder, photographer, safety watcher. |
| P.7 Protocol | Species Gallery | Review the Kāwaroa species list. Use the Species Gallery to familiarise participants with te reo Māori names, zone badges, and C/% measure types. |
| — | Education → Species Quiz | Run the 8-question species quiz as a pre-survey warm-up activity. Aim for ≥6/8 before going to the reef. |
| P.1 Cover | Downloads page | Download and print the A5 booklet on waterproof paper (recommended). Print one booklet per pair of participants. Download the laminated species ID card. |
Check the go/no-go checker on the Weather & Tides page. If swell >0.8m or wind >40 km/h, activate the contingency plan.
Move group to the Destination Kāwaroa shelter or nearby classroom. Do not attempt to access the reef.
Open the Education page → Bad Weather tab. Run the Virtual Transect Explorer as a guided group activity (15–20 min).
Run the Species Identification Quiz (10–15 min). Use the Species Gallery for reference.
Print or display the Intertidal Zone Diagram from the Downloads page. Facilitate a discussion on zone ecology and stress factors.
If time permits, run the Data Analysis Activity using TRC historical kaimoana data (20–30 min).
Reschedule the field survey for the next suitable low-tide window. Check the tide table on the Weather & Tides page for the next ±2hr window.
Never compromise on safety. The reef will be there next time. All bad-weather activities are on the Education page and are directly linked to the Kāwaroa Reef curriculum — participants still complete meaningful learning even without a field visit.
